France Election Will Be Close

The first round of the presidential election is only 9 days away, and it is still up in the air as to which two candidates will face each other in the second round two weeks later.

The polls have remained pretty much the same as they have been with Nicolas Sarkozy leading Segolene Royal coming in second, followed by Francois Bayrou in third.

The big question is how will the people who are still undecided vote. Polls are notoriously inaccurate in France, and the large number of people still undecided, about 1/3 of the voting population, is no doubt one reason. There should be a big turn-out, and the results will be interesting for sure.

It is hard to believe that undecided voters still make up 30-40% of the electorate. What are they waiting for...it's not like any candidates are going to completely change their positions of ideas days before the vote.

Boz brings up an interesting point in his comments. Can it be that 1/3 of the voters really haven't made up their minds, or are they just saying that to pollsters for some reason? Perhaps they really plan to vote for a certain controversial candidate but don't want to admit it to anyone. Remember there are 12 candidates in the first round this year from parties on the ultra left to ultra right. Since poll results in the past have been so inaccurate in French elections, I've even wondered if French people even give pollsters incorrect information for some reason. If any French people would like to chime in, please do. Your comment will be approved for posting.
